A Little History Lession In Case Some Of You Forgot.?

I understand that the majority of fans on here aren’t Floyd Mayweather fans. I have loads of respect for Manny Pacquaio, Shane Mosley, and Miguel Cotto and By no means am I trying to degrade them in any way shape or form. However I read some of these comments, and I can’t help but wonder if people are trying to use rumors and personal bias to discredit what Floyd has done as a fighter.
Floyd Mayweather is one of the best fighters of this era without question. He has manged to capture titles in five different weight classes. The man has been ranked one of the top 10 P4P for the last 11 years ever since 1998, in 1998 fighters like Antonio Margarito and Miguel Cotto wern’t even relevant in the sport.
My question is how can a fighter be dominate in the sport for so long, but yet get so little respect. I always wondered was it his attitude that turns away fans. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_fJQ5Ltb…

I have nothing against Floyd Mayweather but I am a guy who believes in backing up what you say and Floyd said allot! He said he was the greatest, he is unbeatable, he disrespected Arturo Gatti…although maybe he wasn’t far off but still no need to disrespect a fighter of Gatti’s courage and heart, Gatti is the definition of a fighter. But that aside If he is the best like he claims, much like Rocky Marciano..why retire so young? why avoid Shane Mosley your entire career like the plague? Why not fight Miguel Cotto? Basically what Floyd did was (and you cant knock him for it cause most top fighters do it) is made a name off Corrales who was never a A grade fighter, he was a B grade fighter same with Castillo, but they were risky opponents for him. But after that what did he do? Ill give him credit for Oscar.
He is certainly ONE of the best fighters since the mid 90’s you gotta give him that but of all time? No, not the way he did it before he retired, now if he can come back and beat Marquez, Mosley and Pacquiao…then by all means rank him up with the best pound for pound of all time.
But this whole title in 5 weight classes? your an avid boxing fan and box yourself, do you really consider it 5 weight classes? come on? He only captured titles in 3 weight classes. Featherweight, Lightweight and Welterweight…which is still impressive.
I think its a shame guys like DeLaHoya and Mayweather get credit for 5 weight divisions when its really just 3 divisions. Jr Welterweight, Welterweight and Super Welterweight/Jr Middleweight are just WELTERWEIGHT! People have to start getting this if things are ever going to change for the better in this sport.
When I am a 70 year old boxing fan I want to be able to talk about being a fan in a time of as many great fighters as I can, So Im always rooting for someone like Jones Jr, Mayweather, DeLaHoya, Pacuiao, Mosley, Whitaker, Hopkins, Lewis..weather I like them or not I root for them to be great because id rather bare witness to a great legend and dislike him then not have been witness to a great legend at all.

because no one likes an egotistic d!ck who runs his mouth but doesn’t back it up anymore
i look at his boxing record n majority of his ko’s were in his early career when he was exciting
but lately his fights been boring (hatton doesn’t count for me everyone knew he was gonna get KOed sooner or later)
FYI Miguel Cotto was an ameture in 1998 so of coarse he wasn’t relevant… he turned pro after the 2000 summer olympics if i’m not mistaken

Floyd Mayweather has never been an underdog in all his fights. He’s not the kind of fighter who takes a lot of risk. If he fights someone in which he will be considered an underdog, like Paul Williams for example, then he’ll probably get more respect especially if he pulls out a win.

What Ruddiger said.
Floyd didn’t just duck Mosley, he used his retirement party to avoid Cotto and Margarito as well. What Mayweather did was just let them fight each other first then come back.

I’ve tried most of my life to educate people about the SPORT of boxing. It’s an athletic contest according to a set a rules. It’s not a streetfight with gloves. There are many people, and I call them “violence fans”, that refuse to understand the sporting aspects of boxing. All they appreciate is violence, and need their thirst for it quenched by a blood-and-guts boxer. Folks like that refuse to understand what a guy like Floyd Mayweather brings to the ring. They refuse to understand just how difficult it is to be a great defensive fighter, and that skilled defense is a higher degree of difficulty than skilled offense. So these violence afficiantos watch a Mayweather fight and view Floyd as spoiling the fun. How dare he make Ricky Hatton miss and miss until the Englishman tires! Then Floyd opens up on the tiring, defenseless opponent and scores a tko. The fan of violence is not placated, he is mad at the ease of which Floyd wins the fight.
To answer the question of how can Floyd be so dominant and yet not fully appreciated? There’s a huge chunk of the fans that are incapable of understanding the craft of boxing. It’s my wish that those folks just ONCE lace up the boxing gloves to get an understanding of just how difficult boxing truly is, and how amazingly skilled Mayweather truly is.
What baffles me a bit is how defense is treasured in other sports. No-one ever says that Nolan Ryan would be a better pitcher if he would have just given up a few homers a game. Or that the 85 Bears defense would have been more enjoyable if they couldn’t defend the pass. It’s ridiculous to say that, it’s just as ridiculous to say that Floyd would be a better fighter if he would let himself get hit a little more. That’s not the object of boxing, that’s not the goal.

Floyd is full of it. Dude Floyd should have come out of retirement and fight the dude that has the championship belt! and that is Shane. a true welter, Don’t come out of retirement because a smaller guy calls you out to fight at a catch weight! That move did not looked good on Floyd. Specially when the floyd is always self-idolizing and calling himself the best boxer out there at 147?
Those videos that you posted where okay for that time, now is now, and the time is here for Floyd to call out Shane

Very interesting video, it make you wonder whether boxing is on the up and up don’t it? Sounds like some funny business was going on behind the scenes. In answer to your question, Floyd never lost, he never sold out, and those who control the boxing media, control the perception the public has of the fighters. In short, we the public believe what we read in the papers, mags, and see on the tube. Thanks for opening my eyes bro, sometimes I get a bit caught up in all the hype surrounding boxing and miss the most important part of it.

You know Norman, the majority of boxing fans favor the brawling style. The style of taking a punch in order to give one. That would explain why fighters like Mayweather Jr, Malignaggi, Cory Spinks, Jones Jr…. who like to hit but not get hit and do everything possible to avoid a punch are very disliked.
I have been around the game long enough to appreciate all aspects of boxing. Even though I do enjoy watching Pacquaio’s style over Mayweather’s, that doesn’t mean that I don’t appreciate the skills that Mayweather has. Mayweather most of the time is so dominant that he actually makes his opponents look like amateurs.. therefore.. it becomes a sort of boring competition… or more like exhibition.
Mayweather is a great fighter… not the greatest… but he is a great fighter.
Ducking? When it comes down to it… every figher can be accused of ducking somebody at some point in their career. And I mean every fighter can be accused of that.

Sean G | October 14, 2009 at 1:50 pm

Norman this is awesome imformation. You have made a great case to the rational mind about how Floyd isn’t a ducker but if pewople are blinded by hate and envy the ultimately wontr be able to see straight. Fact after fact and no one has a moment of clarity because they are all too far gone. And if Floyd has to be an underdog to be in a real fight then he will never be great because he is so great he is always the favorite.
Thanks Norman, I appreciate your information and effort to show how great Floyd and his resume is and how Shane ducked him. And anyone with business sense would fight Oscar before anyone…because it’s more lucrative than any other opponent.
